No Need to be the Queen to Have Proper Manners

It’s National Business Etiquette Week so it’s a perfect time to have a refresher course on some proper manners. Proper etiquette may not always be rewarded but bad manners will surely be a turn off. Here’s some basic business etiquette to celebrate the week.

Shake well.
When it comes to the hand shake, don’t offer a dead fish. Conversely don’t put a death grip on the other’s hand. Make two to three pumps shaking from your elbow and then release. Keep the conversation going while shaking to avoid awkward moments. If you want to follow extreme etiquette, the higher ranked person should extend their hand first. When a man and woman are of equal rank, it’s a woman’s job to extend their hand to the man.

What’s my name again?
Forgetting someone’s name can be embarrassing but there are a few tips to help you remember their name. Really pay attention when they introduce themselves, and after a few minutes repeat their name in your head. If they have an unusual name either ask them how to spell it or study it briefly on their business card. Finally, try to make a connection of their name to their profession or hobby. If those don’t work and you still forget their name don’t be afraid to politely ask their name again. It’s better than not using it.

What comes around goes around.
You and an associate have reached a revolving door. What do you do? Most have been taught when entering a building, ladies first. But this isn’t the case for revolving doors. Men have been traditionally viewed as the physically stronger gender and are thought to have an easier time getting the door moving, making it easier for the woman to proceed. However, some women won’t consider this in today’s business environment. So men, offer to go first; and ladies if you wish to go first, politely decline their offer.

So this week especially, make an effort to practice good etiquette. Now put that mobile device on vibrate and get into your next meeting.
